Geography sounds dry until you realise how genuinely strange our planet is. Here are the facts that appear in our Geography Masters quiz and still trip people up every time.
Time Zones
Russia spans 11 time zones. France technically holds the record at 12 because of its overseas territories. This comes up in our quiz and almost nobody gets it right.
Borders That Surprise
Portugal has the oldest unchanged border in Europe (1267). Canada and the US share the longest international border at 8,891 km. Zambia shares borders with 8 countries.
"Geography is not about memorising capitals. It's about understanding how the world is put together."
Mountains and Depths
The Mariana Trench at 11km deep is deeper than Everest is tall. The tallest mountain measured from its base is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. From Earth's centre, it's Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador.
